IRVINE, Calif., November 17, 2025 — Novele today announced the deployment of its EnergyBoard energy storage system at the ASPEN Laboratory at Southern Methodist University, where the system will be tested in a live laboratory environment as part of a collaborative research effort.
The work goes beyond demonstration. SMU researchers are applying their expertise in battery systems and modeling to Novele's hardware and to the software that controls it, with the objective of improving cell health management and extending useful service life. A battery system's economics over a decade are set less by its nameplate capacity than by how well its control layer manages the cells inside it, and that is a modeling problem as much as a hardware one.
An instrumented laboratory allows that question to be examined under conditions a commercial site cannot provide. Operating behavior can be measured directly against research-grade equipment, controlled stress conditions can be applied deliberately, and the resulting data can inform improvements to the control software that would otherwise take years of field operation to surface.
The findings feed both sides of the product. Better degradation modeling lets BoardOS weigh how hard to discharge into a given peak against the cell life that decision consumes, and it informs how future EnergyBoard generations are specified.
The deployment adds to Novele's university-based installations, following the first EnergyBoard field deployment at Stony Brook University in September 2024.
