Novele’s EnergyBoard Achieves UL 1973, UL 9540 and UN 38.3 Certifications and Completes UL 9540A Testing

NEW YORK, January 21, 2025 — Novele today announced that its intelligent, indoor EnergyBoard system has achieved UL 1973, UL 9540 and UN 38.3 certifications, and has completed UL 9540A testing.

Together the four standards cover the battery, the complete system, safe transport, and how a battery behaves if a cell fails. The last of these, UL 9540A, is the fire test that fire marshals and building departments rely on when deciding whether a battery can go inside a building and how it must be installed.

EnergyBoard was built from the ground up, specifically for occupied commercial buildings. It uses lithium iron phosphate cells, a chemistry chosen for its well-documented safety record rather than for maximum energy density.

Most commercial batteries are made for an outdoor pad or a yard, where packing energy densely into a cabinet is an advantage. Inside a building that same density is a liability. Novele built EnergyBoard on the opposite premise: thin, wall-mounted units, modest in capacity, added throughout the building to match its load profile. Spread across many small units rather than concentrated in one enclosure, the system goes where there is wall space, takes no usable floor area, and survives any single unit failing.

Every unit is managed by BoardOS, Novele's intelligent software platform, which runs the system against the building's distinct energy needs and goals, including peak shaving, time of use optimization, demand-response, and resiliency, while holding each unit inside the limits the testing established. Control is distributed the same way the hardware is.

Indoor siting has fewer established precedents than outdoor siting, which is why Novele continues to work with its testing partners and with the AHJs in dense urban markets to build a repeatable approach to safety and permitting where outdoor siting is not an option.

About Novele

Novele is an applied-AI company for energy in the built environment, making buildings intelligent with the hardware-enabled AI layer that lets them predict, reshape, and optimize their power in real time. EnergyBoard, its modular energy storage platform, is built for indoor installation in occupied commercial buildings, and BoardOS is the intelligence that orchestrates it across a single site or an entire portfolio.
