IRVINE, Calif., July 24, 2025 — Novele has been named a semi-finalist in the LA Resilient Rebuilding Cup, hosted by the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI). The competition convened technology companies before judging panels of LACI staff, city agencies, utilities and partners involved in rebuilding parts of the Los Angeles region with more resilient energy infrastructure.
Rebuilding opens an opportunity that retrofit work does not. When a building's electrical infrastructure is being replaced rather than modified, energy storage, controls and load management can be designed in from the start instead of added around constraints that are already fixed. Decisions made during that window determine how the building performs for decades, and Los Angeles is making them now, ahead of significant infrastructure investment for LA28.
Novele's position in the competition is that resilience and operating cost are the same engineering problem viewed from two angles. A system sized to carry critical load through an outage is largely the same system that reshapes a building's daily peak, and treating the two objectives separately produces buildings that pay twice for overlapping capability. What enables a system to serve both objectives is BoardOS, Novele's control software, which manages how much capacity is held in reserve against an outage and how much is deployed against the building's peak. Because that allocation sits in software rather than in how the hardware is specified, it can be set to the building's requirements and revisited as they change.
Much of the dense commercial building stock in Los Angeles has no exterior space for conventional battery energy storage cabinets. EnergyBoard is installed behind the utility meter inside the building, which is what makes it deployable across that stock.
